The Edge Ice Arena :: What a drive! …but a great facility for our NCYH Jr. Eagles Tournament Team. This eager bunch of Bantams started off strong, or so it would seem with a 4-0 win over the home team Foothills Flyers. While the players were pretty stoked with themselves with the win Coach Flash insisted they could play better; citing one hand on the stick turn-overs, passes missing by five feet, points being left uncovered. These short falls would come home to roost the following night when the Jr. Eagles took on Arvada Bantam B.
Arvada Bantam B is undefeated in the regular season and undefeated in this tournament. Our Jr. Eagles gave them a scare when they got out to a fast 2-0 lead in the first period. Second period was a different story. Arvada kicked it up a notch “BAM!” Your Jr. Eagles were down by three, then by six; it all happened so fast. Coach Flash was hear whining about how flat the team was, how quickly they ran out of gas. It would seem the Arvada boys got home, got a good meal and a good nights sleep in preparation for the next game while the NCYH some boys went off skiing, others had high school hockey try-outs till 11:30 PM and still others had an early game of lacrosse before heading to The Edge. Oh, I almost forgot about the all night party crowd. Cést le vie. In the lobby after the game it was explained to this reporter that the Arvada boys also play on a competitive roller hockey team in the off season (Read Off Season Roller Hockey), an interesting aside.
In the final analysis it was a good showing even if Coach Flash’s Merry Band of Miss-Fits won but two out of four. Sounds better if you say: “They only lost two games!”. Miss-matched socks, miss-matched skills, miss-matched attitudes; still one of the best group of hockey boyz and the pride of their coaches, especially in the final two game where they really gave Casper a scare going into the third period with a one to one tie. Final in that one was 3-1. Casper would go on to win the whole shootin’ match. Rock Bottom Springs had one of the toughest goes where the Jr. Eagles took away any chances and defeated them 3-1.
The only injuries sustained besides the usual bumps and bruises to the body and ego was a broken wrist. CJ Lucas received a wicked slash to the wrist which broke both bones! Nonetheless, CJ was there for the final games, on the best supporting his team as best he could.
A hearty thanks to John Emery for organizing the whole thing. Coaches Mark Gembarowski and Larry Loomis for putting up with Flash’s psycho-babble coaching methods and Jill LeCount for snapping a photo of the team after their final game.
